Names are Important
- You Protect Your Name.
- Bible Names Often have Special Significance beyond the Personal.
- God Makes it Clear that His Name is to be Kept Holy (Psalm 111:9; Matthew 6:9).
There are Many Designations for God, but his Name is YAHWEH (Exodus 3:14-15)
What Does it Mean to Misuse God’s Name?
- Failing to Perform an Oath Made in His Name (Leviticus 19:12)
- Using Profanity – “Common” use of Holy Words (Jude 1:9-10)
Beautiful Holy Words: God, Jesus, Christ
Scary Holy Words: Hell, Damn - Professing to be Christian, but Living in a Worldly or Profane Manner (Hebrews 6:4-6)
Do You Make Oaths in God’s Name to Support Your Credibility?
Do You Profane His Name in Exclamations?
Are You Living in a Way that Brings Glory or Shame to the Name of Christ?
If we are concerned with How to Build a Life, we need look no further than God’s word! God’s commands provide a blueprint for how to build successful lives. Thus far we have examined the first two of the Ten Commandments: Put God First and Accept No Substitutes. Sunday we will examine the third, Give God the Respect Due Him.
Exodus 20:7 You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
There are many designations for God: Elohim, El Shaddai, El Elyon, Adonai, Jesus, and Emmanuel (to name a few), but God’s name is YAHWEH (YHWH). Israel took this prohibition so seriously, that from the third century BC on, they would not pronounce it at all – substituting Adonai (Lord) when they encountered YAHWEH in the text.
