Stand Fast: Don’t Trade Freedom for Bondage

Last week we rejoiced that if the Son sets us free, we are free indeed (John 8:36). As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, we continue our series Freedom in Christ by asking: Now that we have been liberated, how do we live in it faithfully?

Sunday our lesson is entitled, Standing Firm in Gospel Freedom. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery… You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love” (Galatians 5:1-18).

The Galatian Christians faced pressure to add law-keeping to grace. Paul’s urgent command rings true today: Stand firm! We will discuss the gift of freedom, the danger of returning to any yoke (legalism or performance), and the proper use of liberty—selfless love that fulfills the law.

This message builds directly on last week’s foundation. Having received freedom from sin’s slavery, we now learn to protect it and deploy it for God’s glory rather than self-indulgence. You will leave equipped to resist subtle bondages and walk in joyful, loving liberty.

Series Recap & Preview: Week 1 reminded us of freedom from sin. This week we stand in grace. Next week (final message) we explore freedom to live by the Spirit in Romans 6 & 8—no condemnation and new power for holiness.

In a year of national reflection on liberty, let this series renew your walk with Christ. Bring someone wrestling with legalism, guilt, or misuse of freedom. Read Galatians 5 prayerfully this week.

Father, help us stand firm in the freedom Christ won and use it to serve others in love.

Do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful
nature; rather, serve one another in love.
